The Stage

Anita is a locality in the municipality of Argenta, Province of Ferrara. It was founded as a “rural village” in December 1939. Its foundation had been anticipated by a series of reclamation works in the area begun in 1921, which had divided the arable land into farming plots, prompting the need for a village. The new village was soon involved in the events of the Second World War by being directly caught in the conflict. During the post war period Anita flourished for a while, then it declined from the 1960s.

Leaving from the hostel we walk next to the church and carry on for 1,5 km on Via Valle Umana, up to a crossroad, where we turn left into Via Casso Madonna. We will go straight on for 950 m, at a crossroad we take to the left and after 70m  the lane turns right, it crosses a small canal and continues on a dirt track on the margin of cultivated fields, after 1,5k m, we find a paved lane running on the bank of the Reno (CAI footpath n.106). We turn left, passing by the agritourism Prato Pozzo and a large eel farm, and after 5,3 km we find a ferry on the Reno which takes people to Sant’ Alberto. If we take the ferry, always in service, we get to the town in the ancient river harbor in the middle of old marshes now reclaimed.

Sant’Alberto is a small town on the right bank of the river Reno where this runs next to the lagoon (valle) of Lido Magnavacca near the start of the embankment of Dosso di mezzo.

S.Alberto refers to St Albert the Great, or Albert of Cologne (Lauingen 1206 – Cologne 1280) a Doctor of the Church. A German Dominican friar regarded as the greatest German philosopher and theologian of the Middle Ages. We continue on our walk. If we leave the ferry we turn right and walk on the embankment (CAI footpath n.106) paying due attention to the natural spectacle on our left, which is the Valle di Comacchio, an enormous lagoon full of wildlife and still with some fish farms below the embankment we may notice some houses both inhabited and abandoned. A stone reminds the so-called “trafila garibaldina”, old and new devices for the management of the waters, fishermen’s huts, with fishing nets always ready on the high embankment. We arrive on the State Highway, which bears the name of our Via Romea. We turn right, and we walk along the pavement of the bridge on the Reno, and again on the right we take the lane that leads to the fishermen’s huts. We turn on the left and carry on for 1 km when on our right we will find a drive leading to the monument the burial site of Anita Garibaldi. We resume our walk after a due halt, and reach the canal running along the right bank of the Reno end we arrive to Mandriole. We turn left, then immediately right on a bridge with a cataract. On the opposite bank of the canal we turn left into Via Poggi; after 450 m we reach the State Highway Via Romea, which we cross with great risk, ad proceed left and again cross the canal on a bridge. We go right flanking the canal for 2 km along a narrow road which becomes a unpaved lane ending at a Stop at a bridge over a main road. We cross this road and take a cycling lane going left and all around the new harbor of Casalborsetti and after 1,1 km continues along the canal. We turn left and after 150m we cross a footbridge which enables us to cross the harbour-canal. Again turning left for 80 m into Via Bonnet on the right, and after 150m we find a large piazza with the modern church on the right, and on the left there is a narrow lane taking us the Adriatic seafront. We are at the end of our stage.

THE LAGOONS OF COMACCHIO – The Valleys of Comacchio, the lowlands of this area came about due to a subsidence occurred around the 10th century. This caused the area to become a freshwater marshland. From the 16th century the marshes became gradually filled with sea water and acquired the character which they have today. In ancient times the delta of the river Po was further to the south of today’s. By silting up the river delta found its way into the sea by moving northward, leaving a vast area of swamps rich in wildlife and plants, now a nature reserve, where its delta originally was.
